Podcast: What will Strong bring to Miami. Where does this staff rank in UM history?

It’s time for a Miami Hurricanes history lesson this week on the Eye on the U podcast.

The soon-to-be-official addition of Charlie Strong as their new linebackers coach — the school still hasn’t actually announced the hire, but the Miami Herald confirmed the hire Saturday — has fans asking whether this coaching staff is the best in the country or maybe even the best in Hurricanes history.

Allow David Wilson and Susan Miller Degnan, the Herald’s Miami beat writer, to walk through the past 30 years of Hurricanes history to look for some of the best. It might be tough to top the 2001 staff, but this current group certainly has plenty of name recognition with Strong, who spent three years coaching the Texas Longhorns last decade, providing an extra punch.

All his past accolades are great. What’s really important is the boost Strong should be able to give Miami both on the field and on the recruiting trail.

When he was the coach of the Louisville Cardinals, Strong flipped Teddy Bridgewater from the Hurricanes to Louisville, stealing the quarterback out of Miami. When he was the defensive coordinator for the Florida Gators he as a finalist for the Broyles Award, giving the Hurricanes three assistant coaches who have been at least finalists for the award handed out annually to the nation’s top assistant. His resume is truly impeccable.

It’s a busy time all over the athletic department, though, and we’re not going to let football steal all the headlines. The baseball team is undefeated and ranked No. 24 after sweeping a four-game series with the Towson Tigers during the weekend, the men’s basketball team is still in the hunt for Atlantic Coast Conference’s regular-season title after an 85-64 win against the Pittsburgh Panthers on Tuesday and the women’s basketball team is back on the bubble — and projected by ESPN to make the NCAA tournament — after upsetting the then-No. 16 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 51-39, on Sunday for its second top-25 win of the season. It’s a worthwhile time to run through what an exciting moment this is in Coral Gables.
