UM women upset No. 16 Georgia Tech on the road, Hurricanes’ fourth win in eight days
The Miami Hurricanes on Sunday won their fourth game in eight days, beating No. 16 Georgia Tech 51-39 in Atlanta. The victory completed a season sweep of the Yellow Jackets.
Miami improved to 16-10, 9-7 ACC. Georgia Tech (19-8, 10-6 ACC) has lost four of five, with three losses to unranked teams.
“Nobody should say, `What’s wrong with Georgia Tech?’ They should give Miami credit for this,” said UM coach Katie Meier. “Georgia Tech is really good. We have great interior defense and size. That’s what Georgia Tech wins on and we are just a good match-up.”
Miami held the Yellow Jackets to under 50 points for the second time this season and forced them into 22 turnovers. Tech’s top players, Lorela Cubaj and Nerea Hermosa, were held to a combined 11 points.
Miami dominated the first half, particularly on the defensive end, and led 26-12 at the break. The Yellow Jackets made three baskets in the first half, shooting 13 percent (3 for 23), and half of their points came from the foul line where they made 6 of 8.
“We had five [interior players], they had two, so our five kids played their guts out against those two, and that’s an advantage for us,” Meier said. “It was a cerebral game for us, but we were tough as nails. We had played Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and then Sunday again.”
Karla Erjavec had 12 points and Maeva Djaldi-Tabdi 10 for Miami. Meier also singled out the play of Destiny Harden, Lola Pendande, Moulayna Sidi Baba and Naomi Mbandu.
UM has two regular-season games remaining, at 23rd-ranked Virginia Tech on Thursday and home next Sunday against Clemson.
