A tropical depression has a high chance of forming this week in the Caribbean Sea, the National Hurricane Center said Tuesday in its latest update.

Environmental conditions appear favorable for disorganized showers and thunderstorms over the southwestern Caribbean Sea, the hurricane center said in its 1 p.m. advisory.

“A tropical depression is likely to form towards the end of this week while the system begins moving northeastward across the western and central portions of the Caribbean Sea.”

People in Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic should monitor the progress of this disturbance, forecasters said.

“Regardless of development, this system has the potential to produce heavy rains over portions of the Caribbean coast of Central America and the Greater Antilles through the end of the week.”

Formation chance through 48 hours: 20%, up from 10% at 7 a.m. Monday.

Formation chance through seven days: 70%

Will the disturbance impact Florida?

It’s too early to say whether the disturbance will affect the Sunshine State.
