Choppy seas, rip currents and coastal flooding may affect South Florida, forecasters say

South Florida will experience choppy seas, rip currents and minor coastal flooding this week, the National Weather Service in Miami said Monday morning.

Here’s a weather overview for Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach:

Marine hazards: Northeast winds and seas will increase beginning late Monday afternoon into the night across the Atlantic waters. A small craft advisory has been issued, and will likely be expanded to Biscayne Bay and the Gulf waters by late Tuesday. The advisory is expected to remain in effect until 1 a.m. Thursday.

Beaches: The breezy onshore winds will affect Atlantic beaches. A high risk of rip currents is in effect for Palm Beach today, and is expected to expand to Fort Lauderdale and Miami beaches beginning Tuesday. Dangerous surf conditions are expected beginning mid to late Tuesday along the Atlantic beaches. Swimming is not recommended when the risk of rip currents is high.

Coastal Flooding: Minor coastal flooding is expected around high tide beginning Monday and lasting through at least mid week for vulnerable Atlantic coast locations. On Biscayne Bay, high tide is expected Monday around 8:48 a.m. and 8:47 p.m. A coastal flood statement is in effect through late Wednesday.

Rain: A few showers will be possible Monday, mainly across Palm Beach County and around Lake Okeechobee although the vast majority of the area will likely not receive measurable rainfall. Rain chances are forecast to gradually increase through Wednesday.

Temperature: Highs will reach the mid-80s on Monday. Expect highs in the low-80s on Tuesday and in the upper-70s on Wednesday.

What about the Florida Keys?

The Florida Keys are forecast to be mostly cloudy on Monday with highs in the mid-80s, the National Weather Service of Key West said.

Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected Tuesday, increasing Tuesday night through Wednesday night.

Forecasters are encouraging captains of small boats to be careful at sea during the first half of this week as northeast to east winds may reach up to 20 knots and waves up to 8 feet.
