Caribbean system being watched as chances drop for Atlantic system closer to Florida
UPDATE: A tropical depression likely to form this week in the Caribbean. What’s the forecast?
The chances of a tropical disturbance forming near the Bahamas have plummeted on Monday while a system in the Caribbean Sea is likely to get stronger, the National Hurricane Center said Monday.
Here’s the hurricane center’s latest update:
Is the disturbance near the Bahamas fizzling?
On Sunday morning, the system that was closer to Florida had a 70 percent chance of forming, but by Monday that had diminished.
Here’s what the hurricane center said in its 2 p.m. advisory:
An area of low pressure with disorganized showers and thunderstorms around 100 miles east of the northwestern Bahamas is moving into an area of strong upper-level winds and dry air.
“The chances of it becoming a short-lived tropical storm are decreasing.”
The low is expected to move slowly west-northwest on Monday, and then turn north and northeast on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Formation chance through 48 hours: 10%, down from 20% at the 8 a.m. Monday advisory.
Formation chance through seven days: 10%, down from 20% at the 8 a.m. Monday advisory.
What about the system in the Caribbean?
A area of low pressure over the eastern Caribbean Sea is expected to move west during the next several days, and environmental conditions “appear conducive for gradual development,” the hurricane center said in its 2 p.m. Monday advisory.
“A tropical depression could form late this week when the system reaches the central or southwestern Caribbean Sea,” the hurricane center said.
Formation chance through 48 hours: 20%, up from 10% at the 8 a.m. Monday advisory.
Formation chance through seven days: 60%, up from 50% at the Monday 8 a.m. advisory
