South Florida is not about to have its second snowfall in recent history, but this week’s chilly temperatures will give the area a real taste of winter — a Miami winter.

Expect highs in the upper 60s throughout the day on Monday and Tuesday, according to meteorologists from the National Weather Service in Miami. Temperatures will take a dip on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning to the upper 40s and lower 50s, making it the coldest night of the week.

“We’re coming up on the anniversary of our only snowfall back in the ‘70s,” said NWS forecaster Sean Miller. This cold front “is of course impactful, but we’ve had colder days in the past.”

Like, for example, when flurries fell in the Miami area on Jan. 19, 1977.

Though you’ll most likely need to bundle up if you live in southeast Florida, areas close to Lake Okeechobee will experience temperatures in the mid- to upper 30s, Miller said.

“We’re right in the period of winter where we can get these periodic cold shots,” he said.

But the cold won’t last. Warmer days are ahead starting Thursday, with high temperatures in the mid-70s throughout the day.
