Weather alert: Flood watch extended in South Florida as storms return
As rain returns to South Florida Wednesday, a flood watch has been extended to 10 p.m. The region also is under a rip current advisory until 8 p.m.
The chance of rain ranges from 30% to 60% in the region, according to the National Weather Service, with thunderstorms again in the forecast mostly after 2 p.m.
Parts of South Florida could see up to five inches of rain, with “slower moving” storms, said CBS News Miami meteorologist Shane Hinton.
South Florida also was under a flood watch on Tuesday. “The flood risk is actually a bit higher” for Wednesday,” Hinton said.
As for where the strongest storms will be, Hinton said forecast models point to closer to the coastline.
One ray of sunshine with the overcast forecast? High temperature will stay under 80 degrees Wednesday afternoon, and the overnight low will drip into the upper-60s.
But Tuesday’s bad weather also included a confirmed tornado in Northwest Miami-Dade.
The National Weather Service reported that a twister touched down in Palm Springs North, according to Miami Herald news partner CBS News Miami, uprooting trees and damaging some homes.
Storms will be sticking around the next two days.
Rain chance increases to 70% in the region on Thursday, according to the weather service. Better weather arrives Friday, with a 30% chance of rain, and Saturday’s forecast is mostly sunny in South Florida.
