The advisory includes coastal and metro areas across Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, with visibility reduced to a quarter mile or less in some spots.
The National Weather Service warns that the dense fog could create dangerous driving conditions, with sudden drops in visibility. Drivers are encouraged to reduce speed, use headlights and maintain extra distance between vehicles, particularly on bridges where the fog may be thicker.
The fog is expected to lift by mid-morning, giving way to another sunny South Florida day, but until then, commuters are urged to stay alert and drive safely.
On New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, South Florida is looking at a mostly clear night into a mostly sunny day, forecasters say. At night, the low will be around 65 degrees; highs are expected around 77 degrees.
