Hurricane Center watching 4 systems. But that’s not why Labor Day could bust in Miami

Four systems in the Atlantic Ocean have the National Hurricane Center’s attention, but none of them are the reason Labor Day could be damp.

Disturbance No. 1: As of the Sunday 2 p.m. update, the NHC puts this disturbance’s chance of forming at 90% in the next two days or five days. It’s midway between the west coast of Africa and the Leeward Islands and will continue to move westward or west-northwestward.

This could became Tropical Depression Paulette late Sunday or early around Labor Day when the system reaches the central tropical Atlantic.

Disturbance No. 2: This system has an 90% chance of developing in the next five days, NHC projects. Folks in the Cabo Verde Islands should expect “gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall” Monday and Tuesday.

Disturbance No. 3: A tropical wave moving west across the Caribbean Sea has showers and thunderstorms but the likelihood it’ll run into upper-level winds keep its formation chances at 10% over the next five days.

Disturbance No. 4: What’s described as “a trough of low pressure located a couple of hundred miles southeast of Bermuda” is bringing disorganized cloudiness and showers. It’ll move west-northwest over the next few days, but with a five-day formation chance at 30%.

What South Florida will see on Labor Day weekend

Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and the Florida Keys could see some stormy weather this holiday weekend, but not because of these systems.

Rather, the National Weather Service’s hazardous weather outlook says strong thunderstorms that could rumble Sunday afternoon with possible wind gusts over 45 mph across the interior and Gulf Coast region. Of course, “localized flooding possible.”

Thunderstorms are expected to be more prevalent on Labor Day into the work week, forecasters predict, although Labor Day ran chances now are down to 60%.

This should be the first week in some time without temperatures of 90 and above, local forecasters say. Still, the weather service warns of heat indexes around 105 degrees so stay hydrated.
