Get ready for strong thunderstorms and possible tornadoes this weekend, South Florida

Hear that rumble?

That’s probably not your neighbor hosting a balcony concert. It’s the sound of thunder.

As forecasters predicted, storms rolled into South Florida Saturday. One of them, in South Miami-Dade and the upper Keys, could contain funnel clouds, the National Weather Service in Miami warned.

The storms in the Gulf also spawned a marine warning from the service through Saturday morning.

By Saturday afternoon, many of the thunderstorms were concentrated in Broward County. The weather service issued a funnel cloud warning until 3:30 p.m.

The strongest of these storms could produce wind gusts of 50 mph and include hail. The unsettled weather, bringing much-needed rain, continues into Sunday on a 60% chance, due to a “cold front” that will bring a bit of also-needed heat relief.

By Saturday afternoon, temperatures already hit 90 degrees.

But when the change comes, temperatures would range from mid 80s to low 70s. But a few of those lingering weekend storms in South Florida could be strong with gusty wind, small hail, lightning, and locally heavy rainfall, the service said.
