Miami International Airport has permanently shut down one of its access roads to make room for the expansion of a passenger terminal.

Drivers used Northwest 20th Street between Mclaughlin Drive and MIA to access the airport via 42nd Court. Now, the stretch has been permanently closed to traffic for the expansion of the South Terminal.

The now-closed street was mostly used by cruise line buses to carry cruise passengers to and from PortMiami, said MIA Communications Division Director Greg Chin.

Drivers now have to detour at Mclaughlin Drive to reach the airport.

The construction of Concourse K, part of the terminal expansion, began a year ago. This is MIA’s first terminal expansion since 2012, and is part of the airport’s Modernization in Action Plan looking to make space for 77 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo by 2040.

The three-level concourse will add six new passenger gates. More post-security dining, stores and a passenger lounge will fill the space.

Concourse K is expected to be completed in 2029.
