Woman killed, 4-year-old injured in I-595 Broward crash near State Road 7, troopers say
A woman was killed and a 4-year-old boy was injured Wednesday morning in a crash on Interstate 595 near State Road 7.
The tragedy happened in the westbound lanes of of I-595 before Exit 9A: US-441/SR-7 NB, according to Florida 511. The area is just west of Interstate 95 and remains closed for the investigation.
The Florida Highway Patrol said the crash involved a silver Nissan sedan, a blue Chevy sedan and a white tractor trailer.
Troopers say the call initially came in as a disabled car, the Nissan, on the inside lane of the highway. Shortly after, the call was updated to say it was a crash with a possible fatality, troopers said.
When troopers and fire-rescue crews arrived, they found a 4-year-old boy inside the Nissan. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Nissan’s driver, a woman, was outside the car when they were struck, troopers said. She died from her injuries.
The other drivers were not injured and remained at the crash scene.
Traffic in the area has been at a standstill for hours. Drivers were redirected to turn around and go the wrong way so they can get off the interstate, according to Total Traffic Miami. The closure shutdown is continuing to cause heavy delays.
Helicopter TV news video showed two crashed cars in the westbound lanes of I-595.
Drivers should avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
