A passenger in a red Corvette was killed after the car’s driver lost control and crashed on the Dolphin Expressway near Miami International Airport early Monday, troopers said.

It happened around 3 a.m. on the westbound lanes of the expressway (also known as State Road 836) in the area of Northwest 42nd Avenue, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver of the red Chevy Corvette lost control of his car, collided with a concrete barrier wall and drove through a guardrail before stopping in the grassy median area that separates the west and eastbound lanes, troopers said.

His passenger, a woman, died from her injuries. The man had minor injuries, according to troopers.

The investigation had the westbound lanes between Northwest 37th Avenue (Douglas Road) and Northwest 42nd Avenue (Le Jeune Road) closed for more than five hours. The lanes reopened shortly before 8:30 a.m.

Troopers have not disclosed the identity of the woman or of the driver.
