An 11-year-old girl died in a boating accident when she was fell into the water and was struck by a propeller, Florida authorities said.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission identified her as Brooke Mejeur.

Two adults and three kids, including Brooke, took a ride on a 20-foot pontoon boat on Lake Osborne in Palm Beach County on Nov. 2, according to the FWC.

The boat was on plane, when suddenly the front dipped, throwing the girl into the water, where she was struck by a propeller, officials said.

She was taken back to shore and died of her injuries.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Brooke Mejeur during this incredibly difficult time,” FWC officials said.

In 2023, 59 people died in boating accidents in Florida, according to the FWC. The agency recommends that boaters wear life jackets, designate a sober driver and avoid riding on the bow, gunwales or swimming platform.

“If someone falls overboard or unexpectedly ends up in the water, you must have a plan,” FWC officials advise. “Be prepared to slow down quickly, throw the person a throwable flotation device (unless the person is wearing a life jacket) and approach from downwind or into the current. Help the person into the boat once the motor is turned off.”

Lake Osborne is a chain of lakes popular for boating, fishing and water sports.
