18-year-old woman fatally struck by propeller while trying to board boat, officials say

An 18-year-old woman died in a boat accident in New Jersey.

The woman, identified as Zeina Mahafzah, was on a raft that was being pulled by a boat on Aug. 25 in Harvey Cedars Boro, Ocean County, New Jersey State Police said.

Mahafzah tried to board the boat when she was struck by the boat’s propeller, according to a news release.

Mahafzah died of her injuries.

“As the investigation is in its preliminary stages, we ask that you keep the family and community in your thoughts and prayers,” a post from the Harvey Cedars Police Department said.

The California State Parks Boating and Waterways Department has information on the importance of boat and propeller safety.

“Even propellers in neutral or at rest can cause serious injuries,” according to the site.
