A “playful” dog is up for adoption after his longtime owner went into hospice.

“With Apollo, we’ll do our best that he goes to the right forever home because he’s lost a home already,” Kim Bernert, South Florida district coordinator for the Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida, told McClatchy News in a phone interview. “And we want it to be permanent.”

Apollo is ready for his next chapter after he was surrendered to a Miami-area shelter. He had been trained as a “service/therapy” dog and helped his owner as she faced health problems. But eventually, she couldn’t care for Apollo anymore, according to Bernert.

“My mom had to go into hospice care so I need a loving family who will always recognize me by their side,” the rescue said Aug. 24 in a Facebook post written from Apollo’s perspective.

Apollo made his debut at the rescue in August. So far, Bernert said he has exhibited the “happy-go-lucky” nature of many labs.

“Most of all, I am obedient, know my commands, love my walks, although I could use a tiny bit of training as I get so excited,” the rescue wrote. “There is not a mean bone in my body, just love.”

In addition to his loving nature, Apollo is known for his “beautiful black shiny coat” and his good behavior at bath time. As he waits for a fresh start, the 7-year-old pup has been living in the Boca Raton area, a roughly 45-mile drive north from Miami.

“I am extremely affectionate, playful and good with my foster brother, Quinn,” the animal organization wrote. “We eat side by side, share toys, drink water together and sleep together.”

As of Aug. 27, Apollo was still in need of a new home. More details about the rescue’s adoption process can be found at lrrof.org.
