Why Walmart has stopped selling two kinds of store-brand cake. One has been recalled

Walmart store-brand cakes were recalled Wednesday because they’re not the cakes the label says they are. And, that can be a serious or life-threatening problem.

The recalled cakes sold under the Marketside brand, according to the recall notice from manufacturer David’s Cookies, carry the label for Marketside Chocolate Chip Explosion Cake. What’s actually in the 7-ounce plastic containers is Marketside Ultimate Peanut Butter Chocolate Cake.

That means neither the name nor the ingredient section tells consumers that the cake inside contains peanuts. If people with a peanut allergy eats it, they could suffer a reaction that, depending on the allergy’s strength, can be anywhere from uncomfortable to fatal.

Wednesday afternoon, Walmart posted a 57-page long PDF listing the stores possibly involved.

Lot No. BS23212 is the only lot affected and David’s says this happened at the labeling and packaging point of production. But the recall alert also says David’s and Walmart stopped all distribution and sales of both kinds of cakes “until further investigation and resolutions have been completed by David’s Cookies and Walmart.”

Return the cakes to the Walmart they came from for a full refund. Anyone with questions about this recall can reach out to David’s Cookies, 800-500-2800, 8:30 a.m. to 5 a.m., Eastern time.
