A company has recalled 77,900 ceiling fans after blades flew off and damaged drywall
Ceiling fans should cool a room and its occupants, not damage the room and be a danger to its occupants. That’s why Hong Kong China Electric Appliance Manufacture Company recalled about 77,900 ceiling fans sold under the Harbor Breeze Bellisle Bay and Honeywell Rio brands.
The problem, as stated in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice: “The blades can detach from the fan while in use, posing an impact injury hazard to consumers.”
And, a hazard to drywall. Among the 60 reports of blades detaching are three that damaged drywall. No people have been injured so far.
Exactly which fans are recalled?
This covers seven models of 52-inch ceiling fans:
▪ Harbor Breeze Brushed Nickel Belleisle Bay Ceiling Fan, model No. 40650;
▪ Harbor Breeze Oil Rubbed Bronze Belleisle Bay Ceiling Fan, model No. 40651;
▪ Honeywell Brushed Nickel Rio Ceiling Fan, model No. 50195;
▪ Honeywell Bronze Rio Ceiling fan, model No. 50514;
▪ Honeywell White Rio Ceiling fan, model No. 51030;
▪ Honeywell Champagne Rio Ceiling Fan, model No. 51623;
▪ Honeywell Pewter Rio Ceiling fan, model No. 51624.
What do I do if I have a recalled ceiling fan?
Hong Kong China Electric is providing replacement fans.
Customers with these fans should stop using them and take a photo of the fan and the date code. Then, contact Hong Kong China Electric either by going through the digital recall registration or by calling 888-232-9895, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Eastern time.
This will start the process toward receiving a replacement fan.
