564,000 adult bed rails sold by Amazon and Walmart getting recalled after two deaths
After the deaths of two senior citizens, Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare recalled about 564,000 portable bed rails sold over 14 years by medical supply stores, Amazon.com and Walmart.com.
As stated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission: “When attached to an adult’s bed, users can become entrapped within the bed rail or between the rail and the side of the mattress. This poses a serious entrapment hazard and risk of death by asphyxiation.”
In fact, the CPSC alert notes there were entrapment deaths in February 2011 and February 2015 — the lives of a 93-year-old woman ending in her California home and a 92-year-old man ending in a Canadian assisted living facility.
The Home Bed Assist Handle models involved in those deaths were Nos. 15064 and RTL15073.
This recall also covers model No. 15062, Bed Assist Rail with Folding Board, and No. RTL15063-ADJ, Adjustable Height Home Bed Assist Handle. The model numbers are on the metal tubing.
These were sold from October 2007 through this month in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Users should stop using the bed rails and contact Drive DeVilbiss for a full refund at 877-467-3099, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Eastern time or register on the website for a refund.
