Winn-Dixie and Fresco y Más recall a brand of frozen shrimp bags due to listeria
Southeastern Grocers, parent company of Winn-Dixie, Fresco y Más and Harveys Supermarkets, has recalled its Fisherman’s Wharf brand Jumbo Cooked Shrimp that is sold frozen in 16-20 count, 16-ounce bags.
Why recall?
Blame it on possible listeria.
Listeria is a serious infection usually caused by eating food contaminated with the bacteria. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1,600 people get listeriosis each year and about 260 die. The infection is most likely to sicken pregnant women and their newborns and can lead to miscarriages, adults aged 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms of listeria infection include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
The problem with these affected bags was found after routine testing detected listeria in the 16-20 count, 16-ounce bags of the jumbo cooked shrimp, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s recall alert issued on Nov. 5.
Southeastern Grocers stopped selling the Fisherman’s Wharf shrimp as the FDA and Southeastern investigate why this happened.
