Why was an almond bar sold at Target recalled? It’s all about the nuts
Bobo’s has issued a recall of Bobo’s 4-Pack Almond Butter Protein Bars that are sold at Target stores nationwide because they may contain undeclared peanuts. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts can risk serious or fatal allergic reactions if they consume these products, the company said in a U.S. Food & Drug Administration alert.
A customer who had an allergic reaction notified Bobo’s, the FDA said. “The recall was initiated after it was discovered that product containing peanuts was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of peanuts on the ingredient deck. This has been the only consumer notification to date.”
The recall was announced on Wednesday, Oct. 27.
Can you swap nuts?
But wait a sec, would people with a peanut allergy consume a product with the name “almond butter” festooned in green under a big ol’ nut on the packaging?
Actually, they may well do so and live to enjoy.
According to a study out of the University of Michigan Medical School and published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology in 2017, having an allergy to one type of nut doesn’t necessarily mean you have to avoid all nuts.
The study’s lead author, Phoenix-based allergist Dr. Christopher Couch, noted that more than half of the people who were allergic to one type of tree nut did not have a reaction to other tree nuts, WebMD reported.
Tree nuts include almonds.
Technically, peanuts are legumes and not nuts, despite the name, and the researchers found that almost none of those with peanut allergies were allergic to tree nuts.
That said, this could be a serious health concern if you do have a peanut allergy.
