Bikes that cost $3,300 to $15,000 recalled because they might get broken by a pothole
A bicycle costing as much as a used car doesn’t guarantee it can survive city streets or rural pathways. That’s why Specialized Bicycle Components had to recall 6,900 Specialized Tarmac SL7 bikes and framesets.
The problem, as explained in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice: “The bicycle’s fork steerer tube can crack or break after harsh impact such as hitting a deep pothole or other stress event, posing fall and injury hazards to riders.”
Specialized knows about two times that the steerer tube has broken “after harsh frontal impact.”
These bikes have “Tarmac” on the back of the bicycle’s seat tube. “Specialized” or “SWORKS” is on the downtube. They come in several colors. The bikes went for anywhere from $3,300 to $15,000 at authorized Specialized dealers from June 2020 through this past August.
Specialized is offering free inspection and repair, although you can probably get a refund if you really press for it.
