The Trump administration has announced that it would roll back a Biden-era extension of Temporary Protected Status for Haiti. A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said that the 18 additional months were “far longer than justified or necessary.” The protections are now set to end on Aug. 3, 2025, unless Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem extends them. There are over half-a-million-people protected under the designation.

The development has ignited fear in South Florida, the heart of the Haitian community in the United States. Haitian advocates and community leaders have denounced the move, saying that sending Haitians back to their home country, which is rife with gang violence and political instability, is unethical and a death sentence.
