IT worker used college’s computer to keep tabs his stalking victims, GA cops say
A trusted IT worker at a private college found the perfect means for stalking and intimidation when he used the school’s computer system, according to investigators in North Georgia.
It started at Young Harris College, a private liberal arts college, and suspect Michael Corr targeted “several” people, the Pike County Sheriff’s Office said in a Sept. 4 news release.
“The victims had received numerous phone calls and explicit text messages from an unknown person over an extended period of time,” the sheriff’s office said.
“The offender ... had used various texting apps to disguise the origination of the phone calls and text messages. Corr appeared to have knowledge of the victims daily routines and would make comments about ‘seeing them soon’. Concerned for their safety a report was filed with law enforcement to identify the individual responsible.”
Subpoenas served on the texting app companies led detectives to identify 30-year-old Corr as the source of the messages. Further investigation revealed he worked as “an IT employee for Young Harris College,” officials said.
“Upon being interviewed by investigators he confessed to obtaining information on people he wanted to contact through the computers at his place of employment,” the sheriff’s office said.
“He also admitted to sending numerous messages, not only to the victims from Pike County but several others in the Young Harris area.”
Corr was charged with two counts of stalking in relation to victims in Pike County, and his bond was set at $11,000, officials said. Detectives are continuing to investigate more victims in the area around the school.
Investigators did not say whether the victims were students at the college.
Young Harris College has an enrollment of just under 1,500 students and is located about a 125-mile drive north of Atlanta.
