Charges against a man accused of fatally shooting a 15-year-old girl were dropped after a new suspect was identified, Virginia police said.

Luis Manuel Cruz-Alfaro, 24, is now charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with the shooting, the Chesterfield County Police Department said in a May 1 news release.

The teen, who was not identified by police, was found in a car just outside of Richmond at about 12:20 a.m. March 2 with deadly gunshot wounds, police said. She was in the vehicle next to a man who police said had also been shot.

The man was taken to a hospital for his injuries, according to police.

Three days later, a man was charged in connection with the shooting, but the charges were dropped after an investigation revealed Cruz-Alfaro as a suspect in the shooting of both the teen and the man, police said.

A motive has not been determined, and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
