Dog owners can’t get enough of one breed — and its “popularity shows no signs of slowing.”

The French bulldog again was named the nation’s most popular type of dog, according to results published Tuesday, March 18.

“They officially became the No. 1 breed in 2022, and have held that title for three years now,” the American Kennel Club wrote on its website. “French Bulldogs are especially popular in cities, but their playful nature and compact size are great for a variety of lifestyles.”

Here are the other breeds that rank among the most common in the United States:

  • Labrador retriever at No. 2
  • Golden retriever at No. 3
  • German shepherd at No. 4
  • Poodle at No. 5

The top five breeds are unchanged from last year. To create the most recent list, the AKC studied hundreds of thousands of dogs that were on its national registry in 2024. The winners were chosen from roughly 200 recognized breeds, the group wrote online and in an email to McClatchy News.

“French Bulldogs have surged to the top, quickly amassing popularity for their size and adaptability,” the AKC wrote. “It’s hard to miss their signature bat ears on city streets and rural roads alike.”

French bulldogs have been gaining popularity for more than a decade. The breed rose from the No. 14 spot in 2012, eventually replacing Labrador retrievers as the nation’s most beloved type of dog three years ago.

“The Frenchie has solidified itself as America’s sweetheart, and it’s no surprise why,” Gina DiNardo, executive secretary of the AKC, said in a news release. “They are fabulous companions for a variety of people. However, the cane corso is one to watch, as it has consistently increased in popularity since becoming recognized.”

The cane corso, described as a “majestic and intensely loyal” breed, has jumped from No. 47 to No. 14 in the past decade.

For now, here are the rest of the dogs that landed in the top 10:

  • Dachshund at No. 6
  • Beagle at No. 7
  • Rottweiler at No. 8
  • Bulldog at No. 9
  • German shorthaired pointer at No. 10
