Dog owners love two pet names — helping them hold onto their status as the most popular in the United States.

Charlie ranks No. 1 for male dogs while Luna is the favorite for female pups, according to results published Tuesday, Dec. 3.

Charlie clinched “the top spot for the second year in a row after dethroning longtime frontrunner, Max, in 2023.” Meanwhile, “Luna remains the number one most popular name for female dogs and cats for the second consecutive year,” the pet resource website Rover.com wrote in a news release.

Which other dog names rank among the most common? These round out the top five:

  • Max (male) and Bella (female) at No. 2
  • Milo (male) and Daisy (female) at No. 3
  • Cooper (male) and Lucy (female) at No. 4
  • Buddy (male) and Lily (female) at No. 5

To create the list, Rover said it examined millions of pet names that owners shared online. The website studied which names appeared most often to determine the nation’s favorites. In addition to the most popular pet names, the website also considered the top names growing in popularity year over year.

“What we choose to name our dogs is often a reflection of what matters most to us — from music and food to sports and entertainment and beyond,” Rover wrote. “And as world events and pop culture shift, so do the dog naming trends.”

While some of the up-and-coming dog names appear to have taken inspiration from the 2024 Olympics and presidential election, the No. 1 trending name may be familiar to cartoon fans.

“Parents won’t be surprised to hear that everyone’s favorite Blue Heeler, Bluey, captured the hearts of pet people nationwide,” Rover wrote. “The main character’s name surged 58% for dogs and an impressive 122% for cats, claiming the number one trending spot overall for both.”

In addition to dog names, Rover studied the most common names owners gave to their cats. Milo ranked highest for male cats, and owners of female cats were most drawn to Luna.

And if you’re curious about the most beloved dog breed in the country, Rover said mixed-breed pups and Labrador retrievers reigned supreme. Earlier this year, French bulldogs topped an American Kennel Club list, edging out labs, McClatchy News reported.
