A college student who occasionally plays the lottery chose the right time to “try his luck” in Maryland, officials said.

The Information Technology student from Elkridge stopped at an Exxon store he often passes by and decided to take a shot on a Gold Rush 777 scratch-off game, lottery officials said in a Feb. 18 news release.

“While still in the store, he scratched his ticket and revealed quite a few matching numbers,” officials said. “After double–checking what he thought he saw, and having the store clerk confirm it, it finally sunk in that he won $50,000.”

“The happy winner” enjoys spending his time as any college student would: “playing basketball, eating good food and spending time with family,” officials said.

The Gold Rush 777 game launched in May. There are still over 300,000 prizes left on the ticket, including two $1 million top prizes and two $50,000 prizes.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
