Domestic violence suspect shot dead by Alabama police after interstate chase, cops say
A man was shot and killed by an Alabama police officer after an interstate car chase, according to law enforcement agencies.
Officers were responding to a domestic violence call just before 11 p.m. Feb. 4 in Alabaster, about a 25-mile drive south from Birmingham, the Alabaster Police Department said in a Feb. 5 news release.
The suspect — later identified by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office as 44-year-old Christopher Hulgan — tried to get away, leading police on an interstate chase, authorities said.
Hulgan crashed the vehicle on Interstate 459 and got out of it holding a firearm, police said.
Officers shot at Hulgan after he pointed a gun at them, police said.
According to a Feb. 5 news release from the Hoover Police Department, a Hoover officer shot and killed Hulgan, and he was pronounced dead at the scene after life-saving measures failed.
No officers were injured, police said. The officer who killed Hulgan and Alabaster officers involved have been placed on administrative leave as required by department policies.
The investigation is ongoing, police said. No further details were made available.
