20-year-old in stolen SUV leads troopers on 140-mph chase on I-75, Florida cops say
A 20-year-old driver is accused of leading Florida law enforcement on a 140-mph chase while behind the wheel of a stolen car.
A Florida Highway Patrol trooper stopped the chase with a PIT maneuver captured on camera.
Ciuntaye McCants, 20, is charged with aggravated fleeing to elude, grand theft auto and driving with a license that’s canceled, suspended or revoked, according to an arrest affidavit shared by FHP.
The 19-year-old male passenger is charged with grand theft auto, Hillsborough County records show.
At about 3 a.m. on Jan. 5, an FHP trooper spotted an Acura SUV going 110 mph in a 70-mph zone on Interstate 75, according to the affidavit.
The trooper tried to pull over the driver, later identified as McCants, but the 20-year-old is accused of speeding up and “swerving as if he was impaired,” the report says.
McCants eventually hit 140 mph while changing lanes and driving on the shoulder before eventually getting off the I-75 southbound exit at Big Bend Road and swiping the barrier wall with sparks flying, according to highway patrol.
Footage from the trooper’s vehicle showed the driver continuing on and making a hard right turn at a traffic light. The trooper eventually caught up and nudged the back of the SUV to force it to spin out in a PIT maneuver, the video shows.
It appeared the driver tried to recover and keep going, but the trooper looped around and made contact with the front of the vehicle, bringing it to a stop.
The driver and passenger were arrested. Investigators said the Acura was stolen in nearby Pinellas County, where both men are from.
Hillsborough County includes the Tampa Bay area.
