School email links teacher to child porn, Utah cops say. Now an arrest
Deputies said they found “a large amount” of child sexual abuse material after searching the home and electronic devices of a junior high school teacher in Utah.
Authorities did the search after being tipped off that an account tied to his school email address may have uploaded child porn, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said.
The 50-year-old teacher was arrested and booked into jail, deputies said.
McClatchy News isn’t naming him pending criminal charges being filed.
The man teaches in the Alpine School District in American Fork, according to the sheriff’s office.
McClatchy News reached out to the district for comment Jan. 8 and was awaiting a response.
Deputies said they were tipped off after the software company Adobe made a report to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children about one of its users possibly uploading child porn.
The teacher’s name and email were included in the tip.
In an interview with deputies, the teacher “admitted to being an abuser” of child sexual abuse material for five to six years, according to a Utah County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post on Jan. 7.
After searching a hard drive at his home, deputies found “what appeared to be thousands of images” depicting naked children, the sheriff’s office said.
The man said he never photographed or did “anything sexual or inappropriate with his students or any other kids,” according to deputies.
A school district spokesman told KUTV that the district “uses filters on all district computers that block access to inappropriate material while on the district network. We are conducting a thorough review of (the teacher’s) use of district equipment and accounts.”
American Fork is about a 30-mile drive southeast from Salt Lake City.
