Lottery player buys $20 scratch-off at Wawa in Florida — and wins life-changing prize
A lottery player became a millionaire after purchasing a $20 scratch-off ticket at a Wawa in Florida, officials said.
Efren Villamar Herrera, 56, won the $1 million prize — but opted to receive it as a $795,000 lump-sum payment, the Florida Lottery said in a Sept. 16 news release.
The Orlando resident bought the winning ticket from the Wawa convenience store at 3100 South Orange Avenue, officials said. Now the store receives a $2,000 bonus for selling the ticket.
The $20 scratch-off game Herrera played was Gold Rush Limited, which has 32 top prizes of $5 million and 100 prizes of $1 million, officials said. The game’s odds of winning are 1-in-2.65.
The state’s lottery contributes more than $46 billion to education and has sent more than 983,000 students to college through the Bright Futures Scholarship Program, officials said.
It’s not known how Herrera plans to spend his prize money.
Another Florida resident, 57-year-old Isabelle Turner, recently won $1 million on a scratch-off game she purchased at a Publix store, McClatchy News previously reported.
