Man found dead in Grand Canyon National Park by his river trip group, rangers say
A 59-year-old was found dead in the Grand Canyon National Park by his river trip group, rangers said.
Patrick Horton’s body was discovered at about 5:30 a.m. Sept. 7 at Poncho’s Kitchen, the National Park Service said in a Sept. 9 news release.
Rescuers responded to river mile 137 along the Colorado River.
Horton had been visiting from Salida, Colorado, and was on his 10th day of a non-commercial river trip, rangers said.
His group found his body.
Rangers said his death is under investigation. No other information is available.
There have been at least 15 deaths at the Grand Canyon this year, the Lansing State Journal reported from the National Park Service.
A 60-year-old backpacker from North Carolina was found dead Aug. 28 in the canyon, McClatchy News reported.
Before that, a 33-year-old woman was caught in a flash flood Aug. 22 in Havasu Creek and was swept away in the national park, officials said. Her body was found three days later.
As one of the most popular national parks in the U.S., over 4.7 million people visited the Grand Canyon in 2023.
