80-year-old visiting Grand Canyon dies after boat flips on river, park rangers say
An 80-year-old man visiting Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona died after his boat flipped on a river, rangers say.
The man was on a commercial river trip near Fossil Rapid on the Colorado River the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 25, when his boat flipped, and he was thrown into the water, the National Park Service said in an Aug. 27 news release.
A group and rangers tried to perform CPR on the man; however, the man died, rangers said. His identity has not been publicly released.
Rangers said they and the county’s medical examiner are investigating the incident, adding that no additional information will be released “at this time.”
The man’s death comes the same day a hiker was found dead in the park after she was swept away from her husband in a flash flood, McClatchy News reported.
Prior to their deaths, 11 people died at the park “so far this year, including three deaths in one week,” KPCW reported.
Annually, the park averages 17 deaths, the New York Times reported.
