Boat struck by lightning on river capsizes, killing angler on board, Utah cops say
A boat hit by lightning spilled three people into the water, leaving one dead, Utah sheriff’s officials reported.
The boaters were fishing in the Bear River near Corinne when it capsized after a lightning strike at 12:10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The three were thrown into the water, but two swam to shore and sought medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries, deputies said.
The third person went underwater and did not resurface, deputies said.
Deputies, divers and other rescuers searched for the missing person, who was found dead at 5:30 a.m., the sheriff’s office said.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to all those affected by this tragic loss, particularly the friends and family of the deceased,” the office said in the release.
Deputies did not identify the person.
Corinne is about a 60-mile drive north from Salt Lake City.
