A significant minority of young voters plan on sitting out this year’s presidential election, new polling reveals.

In an NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist National poll published May 30, 12% of respondents under 45 years old said they likely will not vote for president, though they planned to vote for down-ballot candidates.

An additional 4% said they likely will not vote at all, meaning a total of 16% of young respondents said they probably won’t cast a ballot for president this November. The majority, 84%, said they plan to vote for president.

The poll, conducted from May 21 through May 23, sampled 1,122 registered voters, and has a margin of error of 3.7 percentage points.

Biden isn’t alone with his age concerns. Here’s how past presidents dealt with aging

Older voters, by contrast, were far less likely to say they might opt out of the election.

Only 4% of respondents aged 45 and older said they would likely sit out the presidential election while still voting for down-ballot candidates. And only 1% said they likely will not vote at all, while 94% said they planned to vote for president.

When broken down by partisan affiliation, Democrats and independents were more likely than Republicans to say they might not vote for president.

Eight percent of Democrats and independents said they probably would not vote for president, while 5% of Republicans said the same.

Among all respondents, 90% said they planned to vote for president, while 7% said they likely would vote for down-ballot candidates, but not for president. An additional 3% said they probably would not vote at all.

The poll comes as many Americans are dissatisfied with the choices for president.

A majority of voters do not want to see a rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, according to an August poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

In the poll, many voters described Biden as “confused” and “old,” while many described Trump as “dishonest” and “corrupt.”
