Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg hospitalized for ‘possible infection’
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been hospitalized, the U.S. Supreme Court says.
“Justice Ginsburg was admitted to The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland early this morning for treatment of a possible infection,” spokeswoman Kathleen Arberg said in a Tuesday statement. “She was initially evaluated at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. last night after experiencing fever and chills.”
Ginsburg, 87, had “an endoscopic procedure” at Johns Hopkins on Tuesday afternoon to “clean out a bile duct stent that was placed last August.”
The Supreme Court justice is “resting comfortably,” and will be in the hospital for a few days, Arberg said.
Ginsburg was hospitalized in May for a gallbladder infection, McClatchy News reported. She “underwent a nonsugrical treatment at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore for acute cholecystitis.” The condition was caused by gallstones, according to McClatchy News.
The justice has been treated for cancer four times in the past, including last August. In January 2019, she missed oral arguments for the first time because she was recovering from having two cancerous nodules removed from her left lung, CNN reported.
President Bill Clinton nominated Ginsburg for the Supreme Court in 1993, and she has been serving since, according to The Supreme Court Historical Society. She is known for her stance on civil rights issues and women’s rights.
