The Jif/GIF debate is back, and jars of peanut butter might settle it once and for all

The GIF/Jif pronunciation debate may not have torn relationships apart, but it’s certainly sparked its share of heated discussions and Facebook threads.

In 2013, the creator of GIF — which stands for graphics interchange format — said the term is, indeed, pronounced with a soft-g like the peanut butter brand.

But now Jif has something to say about that.

Jif has teamed with Giphy to release two limited edition peanut butter jars to help settle the debate, the company said in a news release.

“We’re teaming up with GIPHY to put a lid on this decade-long debate and prove there is only one Jif…it’s creamy, delicious peanut butter, not a looping picture you can send to make friends and family laugh,” vice president of marketing Rebecca Scheidler said in the release.

One jar bears the iconic Jif logo and declares “creamy peanut butter — soft-G pronunciation.”

The other reads Gif, “animated looping images — hard-G pronunciation.”

The jars are available on Amazon for $9.99 for a limited time, the release said.

But whether you stand in solidarity with Jif and Giphy or disagree entirely, Jif has curated a collection of GIFs on Giphy to help you “animate your argument.”
