MoviePass declares defeat with bankruptcy, but these subscriptions are going strong
If MoviePass wasn’t already dead enough, news broke on Wednesday that its parent company Helios and Matheson Analytics had filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
The company — which hit its stride in 2017 — let subscribers see a movie a day in theaters for $9.95 a month, Engadget reported. As its subscriber base grew, MoviePass lost millions, ultimately shutting down in September 2019, according to The Wrap.
The company reportedly still owes $1.2 million to customers, the outlet reported.
But as all hope seems lost for a MoviePass resurrection, cinema-lovers don’t have to bid farewell to subscription services altogether.
Several theaters offer their own subscription-based programs that can help fill the moviegoing void.
Regal Unlimited
For $23.50 a month, you can watch “as many movies as you want, as many times as you want, whenever you want,” at any of Regal’s theaters, according to the company’s website. Regal also offers two cheaper options at $21 and $18 a month which limits the theaters subscribers have access to.
Regal Unlimited subscriptions include a number of perks including free popcorn on your birthday, 10 percent off concessions and no black out dates, according to the website.

AMC Stubs A-List
AMC’s membership service lets moviegoers see up to three films a week, the company’s website says. Pricing starts at $19.95, but it ultimately depends on your location and whether you expect to use your membership in other states, according to the site.
You’ll be able to reserve tickets online for free and get 10 percent back on concessions, AMC says.

Cinemark Movie Club
Cinemark’s subscription offering works a lot like Audible: You’ll get one credit a month which you can use on on any adult 2D ticket, the company’s website says. If you don’t have time to pop in for a film that month, your credit rolls over.
A subscription will set you back $8.99 or $9.99 a month depending on your location, according to the website.
The subscription also gives you a 20 percent discount on concessions, waives online fees and offers special member pricing if you’re purchasing additional tickets, Cinemark says.

Alamo Drafthouse Season Pass
For $19.99 a month, you can watch a movie a day at any of the uber cool Alamo Drafthouses in Ashburn, Austin, Charlottesville, the Denver Area, Kansas City, New Braunfels, Phoenix, Raleigh, San Antonio, Springfield, Woodbridge or Yonkers, the company says on its website. You can add another seat to your pass for an extra $18.99 a month.
Some films require an extra $1.99 fee, according to the website.
The pass can’t be used at Drafthouses in New York City, Los Angeles or San Francisco, but it will get you $10 off a ticket at locations in those cities, the website says.
