Miami-Dade School Board sets calendar for 2022-23 year
The calendar for the 2022-23 school year is set.
The first day of school for the 2022-23 year in Miami-Dade Schools will be Aug. 17, 2022, and the final day of classes will be June 7, 2023, the School Board agreed Wednesday.
School calendars rarely alter from year to year. Next year, however, the board agreed to add a fall break. Students and staff will have off the week of Thanksgiving. This school year (2021-22), students had off beginning Wednesday, while teachers had off Thanksgiving Day and Friday.
“This is truly a win for our students, faculty and staff,” Karla Hernandez-Mats, United Teachers of Dade president, told the board. “It’s something [teachers] wanted for many years.”
The union has surveyed its members for years, but the pandemic’s stressors pushed more than 50% of members to vote in favor of requesting an additional day off, she said.
Broward County Public Schools has also approved its calendar for the 2022-23 school year. The first day of school will be Tuesday, Aug. 16, and the last day of school will be Thursday, June 8, 2023.
The district, too, will have a week off for Thanksgiving, from Monday, Nov. 21, to Friday, Nov. 25. Spring break will be from Monday, March 20, to Friday, March 24, 2023.
