SUV driver suspected of killing man in hit-and-run turns himself in, police say
A man suspected of fatally hitting a pedestrian with his SUV and driving off early Friday morning turned himself in to Miami police the next day, the department said.
Deshawn Daniels, 41, is accused of striking 62-year-old Antonio Sanchez with his Chevrolet Tahoe around 3:20 a.m. as Sanchez was crossing Northwest 12th Avenue at 28th Street.
Daniels, who was driving south on 12th Avenue, then left without calling 911 or rendering aid, according to his arrest report. Miami Fire Rescue paramedics took Sanchez to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he died, police said.
Miami police released a description of the vehicle, and a person reported seeing it parked at an apartment complex at 1401 NW 65th St., the report states.
Officers inspecting the Tahoe noticed it had front-end damage “consistent with striking the victim,” Daniels went to the Miami Police Department’s north station and turned himself in, according to the report.
As of Monday, Daniels was being held at Metro West Detention Center awaiting bond on a charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Information on his legal representation was not immediately available.
