Two people were killed and another was injured in a shooting that involved several Miami police officers in Wynwood early Saturday, police say.

The shooting happened around 3 a.m. along a stretch of Wynwood that’s filled with bars and restaurants in the area of Northwest First Court and 23rd Street, police say. Many of the businesses in the area close at 3 a.m., including Mayami Wynwood, 1-800-Lucky, and El Patio Wynwood.

Police officers who were in the area “confronted” a man who was armed with a gun and “shots were fired,” Miami police spokesperson Officer Michael Vega told the Miami Herald in an email.

The armed man — and a woman who was also struck by gunfire — were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in Miami, where they were pronounced dead, according to Vega. It’s not known yet who shot the woman. Another man with a hand injury was taken to the hospital for treatment, he said.

None of the officers involved were injured, but police said that several of them did shoot during the confrontation, Local10 reports.

Police have not confirmed the identity of the people shot dead.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting as is standard whenever a police officer is involved.

This report will be updated as more information becomes available.
