A camera caught an airport-area carjacking. Now, cops would like to catch the carjacker

A woman who entered an airport-area parking lot in a Mustang and left it in a Volkswagen Passat is the subject of a Broward Sheriff’s Office search.

BSO’s problem: The woman used a gun to facilitate the car switch, making it a carjacking.

Surveillance video from Self Park FLL, 901 Old Griffin Road, shows a man sitting in the passenger side of the Passat around 6 a.m. the morning of July 7. The driver is inside, arranging to park the Passat before their flight out of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

A black Mustang rolls up in an adjacent parking lot. The woman gets out, runs over, throws open the Passat’s driver’s side door and orders the passenger out of the car. With her request bolstered by the gun she’s holding, he exits the car. The keys must be still in the car because she then drives down Northwest Ninth Avenue.

About 90 minutes later, BSO says, a woman in a black Mustang tries to use the credit cards gained in the carjacking to pay for a meal at IHOP.

BSO is asking those with information to contact Det. Mark Copley at 954-321-4738. To remain anonymous, you can call Broward Crime Stoppers, 954-493-TIPS (8477), or go to the Broward Crime Stoppers website.
