Here’s what cops say happened at the soon-to-be Wawa and the Wendy’s
A predawn incident that had a Davie Wendy’s parking lot packed with police and a major intersection shut down started with a hit-and-run, police say.
Odane Wellington of Lauderhill has been hit with a stack of charges: attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, kidnapping in the commission of a felony (two counts), possession of ammunition or firearm by a convicted felon, criminal solicitation, tampering with evidence and resisting an officer without violence.
Any of these would be considered a violation of Wellington’s probation. The 25-year-old — whose nicknames include “ATM,” “Kilo” and “Kemo” — got two years of state supervision after finishing a four-year prison stay in September on grand theft and burglary convictions.
On Tuesday morning, the arrest report says, Wellington blew swiftly south on State Road 7, his Mercedes cutting the predawn darkness without its lights. His attempt at turning left onto Griffin Road ended in a crash with another car.
As Davie officer Clint Burns approached, the report says, Wellington jumped out and ran north, toward the Happy Pappy Liquor Store. Burns pursued Wellington on foot and by voice with yells to stop. Wellington cut through the parking lot of a Wawa under construction, shooting at Burns with what police said shells identified as a .45.
Burns took brief cover, but long enough to lose track of Wellington. Wellington took the chance to find an occupied, but unlocked Chevrolet Impala. The report says the driver told police Wellington said, “Drive and no one gets hurt.”
Another Davie officer stopped the Impala before it could swing onto State Road 7. When Burns identified Wellington as the shooter, they arrested him.
