Miami-Dade deputies have handcuffed a 16-year-old boy they say shot a 15-year-old boy in a quiet West Kendall neighborhood Wednesday and the 17-year-old boy who played getaway driver, authorities say.

The Miami Herald is not naming the teenagers due to their ages.

The 16-year-old is facing charges of second-degree attempted murder, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, aggravated assault with a firearm and improper exhibition of a firearm. The 17-year-old is facing charges of second-degree attempted murder and aggravated assault with a firearm. It’s unclear if they still remain at the Miami-Dade Juvenile Assessment Center.

Just after 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, the 15-year-old and a 16-year-old boy were walking near Southwest 80th Street and 152nd Avenue when a vehicle got in their way and “hindered” them, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Detective Samantha Choon told the Miami Herald on the day of the shooting.

An argument ensued and a person in the car shot at both boys. The 15-year-old was hit in his right shoulder and left ankle. The 16-year-old avoided injury and helped his friend to safety to call 911.

Deputies rushed to the scene, aided the injured teen and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took him to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital in stable condition.

In the hours following the shooting, deputies had scant information to go on: no description of the car or suspects. Detectives obtained dashcam footage that came from another vehicle and showed the shooting. The video led them to a black Honda Civic belonging to a 14-year-old girl, an arrest report read.

She told deputies that she lent the car to her boyfriend, the 17-year-old, on Wednesday. When authorities spoke to him, they said he confessed to being the driver during the shooting and did not stop to help the young shot teen, the report read.

He was arrested late Wednesday night.

Detectives also learned a 15-year-old was in the backseat of the Honda Civic during the shooting — they visited him during his class time at Felix Varela Senior High School.

Deputies said he pointed to the 16-year-old as the shooter and made sure to mention he demanded to be let out of the car after the shooting “because he did not want to be involved in this,” the report read.

While the injured 15-year-old was waiting for surgery, he told detectives he knew the 16-year-old, deputies said. It’s still unclear what prompted the argument that day.

The 16-year-old was arrested Thursday morning. Authorities said he told them he was home during the shooting and denied being involved.
