Driver in fatal North Miami crash owed $796 in fines and had a suspended license

The man police say was behind the wheel of the Dodge Challenger in a three-car crash on Monday that killed one person shouldn’t have been driving, according to Miami-Dade online traffic records.

Jahmel Minott Jr.’s online driving record said his license was suspended 12 days before the crash for not paying $796 in traffic fines from an incident on Dec. 11. The Coral Springs 18-year-old was ticketed for, and convicted of, careless driving, failure to stay in a single lane, failure to properly signal a turn and improper start from a parked position, $195 for each violation.

When Minott didn’t pay, his license was suspended on Jan. 19.

While Minott apparently couldn’t find the money to pay those fines, somebody found the money for him to post $25,000 bond after he was arrested on Tuesday. He is charged with vehicular homicide-reckless driving, leaving the scene of a crash with a death and leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury.

North Miami police say Minott was driving the red and white Dodge Challenger that started the three-car crash that killed Fabian Gonzalez, a passenger in the performance car with Minott. A friend told NBC 6 that Gonzalez was considering buying the car.

Another person was critically injured in the crash that left car parts scattered on the road from Northwest 119th to 120th street along Northwest Seventh Avenue.
