‘Speed was obviously a contributing factor’ in a deadly North Miami crash, police say

An investigation is underway after a fatal crash in the area of Northwest Seventh Avenue in North Miami Jan. 31, 2022.

One man was killed and another person was seriously injured in a violent three-vehicle crash in North Miami early Monday morning.

“If you saw the destruction out there, speed was obviously a contributing factor,” said North Miami Police spokesman Major Kessler Brooks.

Detectives were still trying to piece together what happened Monday evening.

“We are trying to determine whether the velocity was based on a drag racing incident or a simple loss of control of the vehicle,” he said.

A third person was involved in the crash, Brooks added, but suffered minor injuries.

The accident, which closed a stretch of Northwest Seventh Avenue for hours, happened around 2:20 a.m.

Brooks said the accident occurred when the driver of a red and white Dodge Challenger was heading North on Northwest Seventh Avenue, the driver of a white Range Rover was going west on Northwest 119th Street and the driver of a black Infiniti sedan was traveling south on Northwest Seventh Avenue — attempting to make a left turn.

TV news video showed a crashed white Range Rover, with two damaged cars nearby and debris scattered across the road.

The driver of the Challenger, a man in his early 20s, died in the car. Brooks said the driver of the Range Rover, who was not identified, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition. The driver of the third car was checked out at the scene and did not require hospitalization.

Northwest Seventh Avenue between 119th and 120th streets remained closed for hours during the investigation and subsequent cleanup.
