Out went a Big Lots and in comes a Presidente Supermarket.

Presidente, one of the largest Hispanic-owned grocery chains in the country, with nearly 45 stores in Florida — about half of which are in Miami-Dade — is moving into a former Big Lots space in Miami Gardens at 5580 NW 167th St.

The new Presidente will be its third in Miami Gardens, joining existing stores at 18350 NW Seventh Ave. and 4675 NW 199th St.

The grocery store, just above 27,700 square feet, should open around July, founding owner Omar Rodriguez said in a statement.

“We are thrilled to continue expanding in Miami-Dade, our home, and to bring Presidente Supermarkets to more neighborhoods and communities in South Florida,” Rodriguez said. “We are grateful for the opportunity to grow and invest in a city where we have proudly served our customers for several years.”

Last spring Presidente signed on to become an anchor of a proposed $1 billion Southplace City Center redevelopment of the faded Southland Mall in Cutler Bay. That Presidente would anchor a residential tower on what used to be a Sears store.

South Miami-based Bravo & Partners Realty represented Presidente in both endeavors — the planned Cutler Bay project, which could take five to seven years, and the lease arrangement for the new Miami Gardens store.

Big Lots, which had announced the closing of all of its stores around Christmas 2024, struck a deal just before the New Year that it may be able to keep hundreds of its stores open after a sale transaction with a Boston asset management firm. Big Lots didn’t say which stores may remain.

The Miami Gardens location was already vacated by Big Lots before the company’s recent upheavals.

“We are working with the buyer and other parties to determine which stores may remain open,” Big Lots said in a statement in January.

The new Miami Gardens Presidente will, like its other stores, feature fresh produce, meat, seafood and an array of international and specialty foods.

Presidente was founded by Rodriguez in 1990. The bulk of its stores are in South Florida but there are a handful in the Orlando area.
