Two major discount chains are going out of business. Here are Miami, Broward closings

Update: Big Lots announced it may be able to keep hundreds of its stores open after executing a strategic sale transaction with a Boston asset management firm. The announcement, on Dec. 27, 2024, did not say which stores may remain. “We are working with the buyer and other parties to determine which stores may remain open,” the chain said in a statement on Jan. 8.

Two major discount chains announced within days that they are shutting down all of their stores.

Party City, a New Jersey-based chain founded in 1986 that sold costumes, balloons, and decorations — and earned its nickname “Halloween Costume Warehouse” — filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time in two years on Dec. 21, USA Today reported.

Party City plans to put its assets up for bidding and sell off its inventory as it shutters about 750 stores nationwide. Reports put Feb. 28 as the final day its stores will remain open.

“Customers are encouraged to shop now for everything ranging from birthday party supplies to decorations for the holidays and New Year’s Eve while the selection is best,” Party City said in news release.

On Dec. 19, Big Lots announced it was closing all of its stores after filing Chapter 11 in September and shutting down about 400 of its stores, including six in South Florida from Miami Lakes to Boca Raton.

Big Lots, a discount home good retailer founded in Ohio in 1967 as Consolidated Stores, began “going out of business” sales over the weekend, USA Today reported. Most goods, which include closeout and overstock merchandise from other stores like furnishings, rugs and appliances, are marked down by 25%. Christmas decor, for what will be the chain’s last Christmas, is marked down at 50%, according to Yahoo News. Big Lots is looking at a March end date.

“We all have worked extremely hard and have taken every step to complete a going concern sale,” Bruce Thorn, Big Lots’ president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “While we remain hopeful that we can close an alternative going concern transaction, in order to protect the value of the Big Lots estate, we have made the difficult decision to begin the [going out of business] process.”

All stores means that remaining stores in South Florida for both Big Lots and Party City are shuttering.

Here’s a breakdown on the closings in South Florida:
