16-year-old dies in police custody after crash ends Hollywood-to-Miami police chase
FRIDAY UPDATE: There will be a candle vigil for Christopher Walls Saturday at 5 p.m. at Northwest 60th Street and 27th Avenue.
What started as a Monday morning carjacking and chase in Hollywood has turned into a Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigation after a 16-year-old suspect died after being taken into custody by Miami-Dade police.
That’s according to Miami-Dade police. Social media posts identified the boy as Christopher Walls.
Miami-Dade police’s timeline:
▪ Walls carjacked a 2018 Alfa Romeo in Hollywood and led Hollywood police on a pursuit south into Miami-Dade County. A Miami-Dade police helicopter tracked the chase from the air.
▪ Walls crashed on Northwest 27th Avenue in a wreck that started south of the intersection of Northwest 62nd Street. Overhead views from media helicopters showed the Alfa had careened from the southbound lanes, across the median, possibly struck a Metrorail track post and ended against a fence on the northbound side.
▪ Hollywood police took Walls into custody.
▪ Miami-Dade Fire Rescue treated him on the scene.
▪ Miami-Dade police officers took custody of Walls as Hollywood police handled their part of the investigation.
▪ “During the course of the investigation, the subject became unconscious and was transported by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to Hialeah Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.”
